Reel2Reel: A Teen Film Competition

The Historic Artcraft Theatre, Franklin

Calling all student filmmakers! Interested in directing, acting, or producing an original film? This October we will be having our inaugural Reel2Reel: Teen Film Competition at the Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin and all Johnson County high school students are invited to participate! Video categories include documentary, music video, and short film. The overall winner will receive $400. Three honorable mentions will receive a $100 prize, and $50 will be awarded to an up-and-coming filmmaker. Prizes funded by gifts to the JCPL Foundation.

Film Guidelines

Winner and Honorable Mention prizes will be awarded at the event on Thursday, October 3 at 6 p.m. at the Artcraft Theatre.

All entries must be turned in between Monday, April 15 and Saturday, August 31, 2024.

ENTRIES

All entries must be submitted using the online application. Please upload and attach your film OR, link to your video URL that is available on a public site [YouTube, etc.]

CATEGORIES

  • Documentary (Maximum 15 minutes)  — research on an issue/topic or a person of importance
  • Short Film (Maximum 15 minutes) — tells a fictional story
  • Music Video (Full length song)  — based upon on a song, reflects the meaning of the song or artist

RATINGS

All entries must be G or PG-rated. For descriptions of ratings according to the Motion Picture Association of America visit https://www.motionpictures.org/film-ratings/

PRIZES

  • $400 – Winner
  • $100 – 3 Honorable Mentions
  • $50 – Up-and-coming

Community members will judge all entries. The judging rubric will be available soon.

All filmmakers will be recognized at the event. Due to time constraints, not all entries will be screened in their entirety during the event. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening. (3) honorable mention awards of $100 will be awarded along with the Winner who will receive $400 and the Up and Coming award of $50.

UP-AND-COMING FILMMAKERS

*Students in grades 6-8 may submit an entry according to the listed guidelines for the opportunity to win a $50 prize. Filmmakers will be recognized at the event and the winning entry will be upload to JCPL’s YouTube page.
